Recombined Milk Production Line

A rapid, hygienic route from milk powder to market-ready liquid milk that protects nutrition and margin.

  • Cost-effective powder-to-milk conversion
  • Hygienic and automated turnkey solutions

Recombined Milk Production Line Overview

Recombined milk results from adding water to skim-milk powder (or WMP) and separately dosing milk fat until the desired composition is reached, creating liquid milk indistinguishable from fresh milk — yet without the need for a local dairy herd. This method is indispensable for regions with limited raw-milk supply or cold-chain infrastructure, because powders can travel long distances and be rehydrated on demand.

ProTrus engineers a closed, CIP-ready system that automates dosing, mixing, homogenisation and HTST/UHT heat treatment, then transfers the product directly to an aseptic filler. The result is microbiologically safe milk with a chilled life of 14 days or an ambient life of 6 – 9 months, depending on the selected process window.

Key Processing Steps & Equipment

  1. Water preparation & powder dispersion – Reverse-osmosis water at ≈ 40 °C is dosed into a high-shear mixer; controlled vortex action prevents powder agglomerates and minimises oxygen pick-up, safeguarding taste.
  2. Fat melting & emulsification – An inline or jacketed tank melts anhydrous milk fat (or vegetable fat), which is injected and emulsified to 1–3 µm droplets, ready for downstream homogenisation.
  3. Standardisation & pasteurisation/UHT – Inline refractometry keeps total solids on spec; then HTST 72 °C / 15 s or UHT 138 °C / 4 s eliminates pathogens while preserving functional proteins.
  4. Aseptic filling & packaging – Product is cooled to 20 °C and filled into Tetra Brik® Aseptic, Tetra Top® or PET bottles, allowing ambient distribution and extended shelf life with a lower carbon footprint than HDPE.

What Is Recombined Milk?

Recombined milk is made by blending milk powder with water and fat to match the composition of fresh milk. It offers a practical solution for dairy supply in regions with limited farming or cold storage.

Key Stages in Recombined Milk Production

  • Powder Dispersion: High-shear mixing avoids clumping and ensures smooth rehydration.
  • Fat Emulsification: Fat is melted and evenly dispersed into the liquid base.
  • Homogenisation: Stabilises milk structure and improves mouthfeel.
  • Thermal Treatment: Destroys pathogens using HTST or UHT systems.
  • Aseptic Filling: Maintains sterility and extends shelf life up to 9 months.

Ideal Applications

  • Food relief and government supply programs
  • Export-focused dairy brands
  • Regions with seasonal milk shortages
  • Contract manufacturers and co-packers

Compliance and Quality Assurance

ProTrus systems help producers meet Codex STAN 206 standards. All processes are digitally monitored for critical control points including fat content, total solids and heat treatment.
