How a Form, Fill and Seal Machine Works

An FFS machine turns a roll of plastic film into filled, sealed portion packs in one continuous line. Nothing is carried between stages, so the product is handled less, contamination risk drops, and you no longer store empty cups. Four stages run in sequence.

1

Forming

Heat and air shape the film into cups. Round, oval, square and honeycomb designs are possible.

2

Filling

Dosing units fill every cup accurately. Filling stations are built from 316L stainless steel.

3

Sealing

Oxygen can be removed by vacuum before a lid film is sealed onto each cup.

4

Cutting

Cross and longitudinal cutting stations separate neat, uniform packs. Cut-off lengths run up to 400 mm.

Minipacker, QT Series and QT Series with In-Mold Labeling

Choose the platform by output, forming depth and line length. All three use servo drives, an intuitive touchscreen control system and a stainless steel hygienic chassis built to CE safety standards.

Platform 01 · Compact

Minipacker FFS Machine

The Minipacker packs small and mid-size portion volumes in a footprint only 2.5 to 3 meters long, which suits producers starting with cups or adding a new product line.

  • Up to 20–21 cycles per minute
  • Forming depth of 30–50 mm
  • Bottom film width of 150–300 mm
  • Machine length of 2.5–3 meters

QT series form fill seal machine for dairy and food cup packaging

Platform 02 · Industrial

QT Series FFS Machine

The QT series is the high-capacity workhorse for dairies and food plants. A deeper forming station, wider film and a longer line support higher output and a wider range of cup sizes.

  • Up to 18–25 cycles per minute
  • Forming depth up to 100 mm
  • Bottom film width of 150–500 mm
  • Machine length of 5–12 meters

Platform 03 · Decorated cups

QT Series FFS Machine with In-Mold Labeling

In-mold labeling (IML) places the label in the cup wall during forming, so the decoration resists peeling and humidity in chilled storage.

  • Up to 20–21 cycles per minute
  • Forming depth up to 100 mm
  • Bottom film width of 150–500 mm
  • Machine length of 6–12 meters

Shelf life

Vacuum, MAP and Airtight Sealing

Portion packs stay fresher when oxygen is controlled. An FFS line can evacuate the pack before the lid film is applied, or flush it with an adjusted gas mixture, and the sealing station closes every cup airtight against contamination.

  • Vacuum before sealing
  • Optional modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)
  • Airtight sealing stations
  • In-mold labeling that resists peeling and humidity

What You Can Pack on an FFS Machine

Frequently Asked Questions About FFS Packaging Machines

Have a question about your packaging line? Ask our packaging engineers.

An FFS (form, fill, seal) machine forms cups from a roll of plastic film, fills them with product, seals a lid film on top and cuts the packs apart. The whole sequence runs automatically in one line, so products are packed hygienically without handling empty cups or pre-made containers.

Liquid, semi-liquid and creamy foods such as yogurt, fruit yogurt, cream cheese, butter, margarine, honey, jam, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, tomato paste, chocolate spread, syrup, water and still juice. Filling units are tailored to the density and volume of your product.

Cups can be round, oval, square or honeycomb-shaped, with precise cross and longitudinal cutting for neat packs. The machines process common packaging materials, including polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP).

Output depends on the platform and the number of cups per cycle. The Minipacker runs up to 20–21 cycles per minute, the QT series up to 18–25, and the QT series with in-mold labeling up to 20–21 cycles per minute.

In-mold labeling places a pre-printed label into the mold so it becomes part of the cup wall during forming. The decoration cannot peel off or smear, and it holds up in humid or chilled storage. It is available on the QT series.

Your product and its viscosity, the cup size and shape, target output, and whether you need vacuum, MAP or in-mold labeling. Utilities on site and photos or samples of your current cups help us recommend a platform and mold design.
